Email triage for small businesses: start with the sorting
A new inquiry arrives beside a supplier update, an invoice question, and a customer asking to change tomorrow’s appointment. Someone has to read each message, decide what it means, and put it in the right place.

The bottleneck
Give the decision a clear shape
When that sorting becomes a recurring bottleneck, it may be worth automating one small part of the work.
Start with a short list of categories your team already understands: new inquiry, existing job, billing, scheduling, and needs review. Define urgency separately. A billing question is not automatically urgent, and a short message may still need immediate attention.
A classifier reads the message and suggests one of those choices. The surrounding software applies the label or places it in a review queue. Replies, commitments, and changes to a customer’s account can remain with a person.

Where Jev might fit
Jev is one option for turning unstructured information into predefined choices. It also returns confidence information that software can use when deciding whether to request review. A confident answer can still be wrong; the thresholds need testing against examples from your business.
The comparison
Start with a comparison
Use a representative sample, including ambiguous and urgent messages. Compare the existing process, simple mailbox rules, and a classifier. Measure missed urgent items, incorrect routing, review time, and total operating cost.
For a small inbox, a few well-chosen rules may be enough. At higher volume, reducing repetitive sorting could free time for the conversations that need judgment.
